Plinth Blocks
If you’ve purchased some beautiful plinth blocks, you’ll need to know how to install them. Here is a simple guide.
1. Put the plinth block at the base of the doorjamb, 1/8-inch from the doorjamb edge. The 1/8-inch space provides a lip between the plinth block and the side of the jamb.
2. You’ll need to use a drill/driver with a 3/32-inch drill bit to drill four holes through the plinth block. Drill the holes 3/4 inch diagonally from the bottom corners, and 3/4 inch diagonally down from the profiled edge of the plinth block.
3. Happer finishing nails (2 inch nails) to hold the plinth block in place. Stop hammering before the nails are completely flush, then use a hammer and nailset to drive the bails 1/6 inch under the wood’s surface. After that, put wood putty into the holes, smooth with a putty knife, sand and finish.
4. Install the door molding on top of the plinth block. Keep it flush with the edge of the block to preserve the 1/8-inch reveal up the side of the jamb. Use your hammer to nail it into place on the jamb. Butt the end of the baseboard into the side of the plinth block on the floor, and make sure the baseboard is fully nailed into place.
And that’s all there is to it! Simply paint, stain, or otherwise decorate and seal your new plinth blocks and other trim.
